...publication of the black-list is a threat which has been often made, but it is beginning to lose force by repetition. Men do not greatly fear the risk of getting their names on the black-list as long as they are merely deprived of the right to apply for tickets in the future. It is too easy in such cases to procure tickets for personal use through some player or other friend. But if this list were made public each year it is not hard to believe that speculation would stop entirely and at once...

...imagined injustice. The idea of members of a voluntary co-operative association striking" against themselves would appear ludicrous to us, if we did not fear that it might breed among the misinformed results utterly ruinous to the purposes of the Association. What is needed is not the threat of repudiation of a bona fide debt by withdrawal, but rather an earnest attempt to insure a larger membership in order that the obligations of the Association may be more widely apportioned and the price of board for each individual be reduced to a more normal level than at present obtains...

The fakirs bring the guards to life, receive a large reward for their services; the Rao is so delighted to receive his wonderful animal again and is so pleased with the appearance of his future daughter...

...tariff duties, or insistently demand internal improvements, or try to tear down the subtreasurers and clamor for a bank, it could not be said that there was any irrepressible conflict of any industrial sort. So far, then, as hindsight avails, the Southerners in 1850 could not have seen any threat to their civilization from specific material interests in the North. It was the North's moral awakening and not its industrial alertness, its free thought and not its free labor which the Southern planters had to fear. We can not, however, see what actually happened unless we go inside...
