...instructive to watch a literary writer operate in a genre environment, where plot and pacing trump beautiful writing, where the thrill of what comes next is more important than the nuance of the now. When Chabon gets a little flowery, instead of marveling at his elegant prose, one makes mental let's-hurry-it-up-already gestures. But he has clearly mastered a basic truth about the mystery genre:it has an expressive power beyond the uses to which it is generally put. Solving mysteries has an existential meaning for Holmes. To him, it's the "essential business of human...
...Chinese companies have felt the thrill of shopping abroad before?and have later come to regret it. The first celebrated takeover came in 2001, when cell-phone designer Holley Group bought a NASDAQ-listed Californian company called American Champion Entertainment. Only later did the Chinese learn that American Champion's assets amounted to little more than a children's TV show called Adventures with Kanga Roddy. ...created on U2's earlier records. The result is an album that references old sounds for the devoted, integrates fuzzy new ones for the kids and delivers a staggering number of indelible hooks. The only notable weakness is that the pursuit of those hooks keeps Bomb rooted in the thrill-delivering formula of verse-chorus-verse-pedal-steel solo, depriving it of the mood-altering qualities of Achtung Baby or The Joshua Tree. Listening to Bomb straight through a few times is a bit like staring into a closetful of sequins. But depth is not what this album is after...
