Remarkable as these discoveries might once have seemed, they have become almost commonplace. In the past few months alone, researchers have extracted colonies of microbes that thrive at 137[degrees]F in an underground hot spring in Idaho and found others eating into volcanic rock 1,200 ft. beneath the sea floor. Over the past few years, in fact, scientists have been finding life in all sorts of places where biology textbooks say it shouldn't exist. Microorganisms are thriving in thermal springs in Yellowstone National Park and in pristine veins of water two miles underground in South Africa. They...

Physicians don't know much about this mysterious illness. Like TB, it is triggered by a group of germs called mycobacteria. Unlike TB, it is not contagious, though it seems to thrive in hot, humid states in the U.S. Indeed, a recent survey conducted by health authorities in Florida found that hospitals in the region discharged far more patients with non-TB mycobacterial (or, as doctors call it, NTM) infections than with TB. ...Lamb's confidence and warmth, however, their government?by some accounts the most corrupt in Asia?seems to provoke nothing but frustration. After the war, it pursued petty vendettas against its neighbors in the south, and to this day it remains fearful of allowing its subjects the freedom they thrive on. At a time when 60% of the people in Vietnam were born after the American troops left, most of Vietnam's leaders are senior citizens. It's hardly shocking, then, that when a Vietnamese magazine whose name means "youth" held a poll among its readers two years ago, Bill...
