Shay has had two years' experience with major and minor league clubs. He went from Goddard Seminary in 1916 to join the Chicago "Cubs" as short-stop and worked with them throughout the season. The following winter he went to the St. Joseph club of the Western League. In that year, his batting average was .274, the highest of any short-stop in the league.
