...Library, located in the heart of the Yard, maintains exhibits changed at regular intervals throughout the year, in the basement, and first and second floor hallways. Also displays are shown in the Widener room, the Theatre room and fourth floor hall, as well as the Poetry Room, also on the fourth floor...
Twenty-five years ago, one of the major insect menaces in the U. S. was the cattle tick. The entire southern part of the U. S. was under tick quarantine. Damage every year throughout the U. S. amounted to about $45,000,000. But, working with its usual methodical efficiency, the Department of Agriculture practically wiped out the cattle tick by the only sure method: dipping in an arsenical solution. Only a few counties in Texas and six in southern Florida are still under quarantine. Trouble there is that ticks are carried not only by cattle, horses, mules and sheep...
...Labor Board could pass on the case, the A. F. of L. took its iron-clad contract to a Federal district court, which ordered National Electric to live up to its terms-an order the company gladly obeyed. Last week, just as National Electric was posting this order throughout its plant, the Labor Board cracked down with a thunderous ruling that the A. F. of L. contract was "void and of no effect." Its "precipitate granting," held the Board, smacked of trickery, since the company knew that the A. F. of L. union "did not represent the free choice...
This brief caption, flashed on the screen, was all the warning U. S. cinemagoers had last week before the usually innocuous newsreel plunged them into such a bloodbath of visual horrors as few of them had ever imagined. Shown throughout the U. S. these were the first frankly gruesome newsreels of the Shanghai shambles to reach the U. S. Hundreds of feet of this hastily, dangerously made record had been ground out by cameramen under fire or within a few minutes after shellburst or bomb-explosion. They tell, as pitilessly as only the camera can, what war means...
Judged by the progressive destruction of a Lincoln Zephyr which, rammed head on into the curb, burns throughout Forman's, Wong's and Krainukov's films, Wong was the first man on the scene. (Presumably Forman lost time by having to rush upstairs from the Cathay bar to get his machine.) But, according to the best guesses of U. S. newsreel people, Wong must have been turned back by the police after making his first shots, for it is Krainukov whose camera turns in the most gruesomely inclusive report of the bombing...
