...spirit of Jesus is constructive, sacrificial, holy, true, peaceable, forward-looking, full of eager striving; and it is revolutionary throughout. In this critical time for our nation, there comes the holy Eastertide, which is also a testimony to 'deathlessness of spirit.' My fellow countrymen, let us cherish the idea of a 'new- birth'; let us maintain the resolution of 'sacrifice.' Let us hold Jesus as the goal for human living; let us keep the mind of Jesus as our mind, the life of Jesus as our life. Let us bravely go with...
...January 1, 1897. These charts, magazine articles and his textbook covered his bed with fan correspondence from Dow Theorists. Then he started an interpretive-letter service, which is now prepared with the help of a staff averaging 25. Last week his 205th interpretive letter went to 5,565 subscribers throughout the world (by air mail in the U. S.). Typically, it commented on both the primary (year-to-year) and secondary (month-to-month) trends of the market; reminded subscribers that the former ''continues to point downward." said that the latter's trend will be shown...
Confronted by a dearth of new pictures (TIME, May 16), cinema producers last month took to reviving old ones. By this week, 52 old pictures, from Birth of a Nation (1915) to Stowaway (1936), had been exhumed from storerooms, placed on view in cinemansions throughout the U. S. One was that any good old picture will often outdraw any poor new one. The other was that at least one old picture was the best cinema bargain...
Holiday (Columbia) has had a career as noteworthy as any U. S. play in the last decade. Written by Philip Barry and produced on the Manhattan stage in 1928, it played to crowded houses throughout that pre-Depression season, set the style for a hundred-odd comedies of manners that followed it. Two years later, the first screen version, with Ann Harding, Mary Astorand the late Robert Ames in the leading roles, indicated amazingly that in talking pictures the cinema industry had found a medium which could rival the stage in its appeal to civilized, adult audiences...
Twenty years ago, when gentlemen wore starched cuffs and ladies hid in corsets, musical shows were romantic, exotic and historical. The best of them, known as operettas, became minor classics and were repeatedly performed by stock light-opera companies throughout the U. S. During the peak years of U. S. operetta (1910-20), four composers dominated the field: Irish-born Victor Herbert (Naughty Marietta, etc.), Bohemian-born Charles Rudolph Friml (Katinka), Hungarian-born Sigmund Romberg (In Blossom Time), and Manhattan-born Jerome David Kern (Sally, Show Boat...
