Listening to Rainbow, Mariah Carey's seventh album, it's clear that the best reason to rock this New Year's will be to celebrate the end of the Mariah decade. Her record sales throughout the '90s have grown to rival those of Elvis and the Beatles, and to many ears the Mariah sound has grown indistinguishable from the endless cosmetics aisles and multiplexes of our postmodern world. But there's no pot of gold at the end of Rainbow. The album strips that sound down to its purest form, cleverly obfuscating Mariah's predictably smarmy lyrics with sonorous mumblings...
...welcome contrast to thrashing guitars, even if this foray into straight blues is a little uneven. All the tracks here could reasonably be considered necessary inclusions, although, as is inevitable, there are some notable omissions. The band's folk-based yearnings, so prominent on III, are almost ignored throughout. "I let the beast in too soon, I don't know how to live/Without my hands on his throat; I fight him always and still/O darling, it's so sweet" explains Apple on "Fast as You Can," and yet you still don't know whether her sexual prey should flee her in fear or approach her with curiosity.
