...restaurant, which opened in late November, has forsaken the traditional ambience of the old location for a daring redesign by co-owner Deborah Hughes. UpStairs on the Square’s website describes the new décor as “a throwback to 1940s glamour with a modern twist.” And, boy, what a twist. With leopard skin-patterned carpets—except for the zebra-themed Veranda Room—and an explosion of not-quite-clashing pastel colors on the wall, the décor wows even the least fashion-conscious of visitors...

...beyond. Old ways have hustled French furniture manufacturer Domeau & Peres into the vanguard of its field. Bruno Domeau is a trained saddlemaker who plied his trade in the luxury-automobile industry. Philippe Peres traveled France studying with master craftsmen as an apprentice upholsterer with the Compagnons du Devoir, a throwback to the craftsmen's guilds of the Middle Ages. Yet they have yoked their skills to the plowshare of contemporary design. "We're unusual because we're handcraftmen who've decided to work in the contemporary field," says Peres. Ratings plummeted, and by 2001, probably the most financially successful Trek product made since Roddenberry's death turned out to be a throwback action film, Star Trek: First Contact (1996). It cleared a profit of $122 million and provided further evidence that Trek needed another makeover. Nemesis and Enterprise are the result, and the lads will love them. Star Trek, it seems, will now hang its future on a reliable formula: explosions and breasts. Take...

...Vietnam's highlands are renowned for their spectacular scenery, waterfalls and rich hill-tribe culture. But there's another ubiquitous sight along the north's twisting mountain roads: the smoke-belching, gear-grinding, Eastern bloc motorcycle throwback that Vietnamese call con trau gia (the old buffalo). First imported from the Soviet Union in the 1960s, the Minsk's two-stroke engine and body have hardly changed over the years. Northern Vietnam has undeniably become Minsk country, and the old buffalo are used for everything, from personal transportation to hauling pigs, cows and chickens to hill-tribe markets...
