...compelled to comment on the running of the 17th Harvard Raft Race last Sunday. During the conduct of this event. large quantities of garbage and non-biodegradable pollutants were thrown into the already sufficiently dirty Charles River. Should such an environmentally unsatisfactory event have been sponsored by my military organization, loud (and proper) objections would quickly have been made by environmentalists, students and the media. In reading your May 2nd edition, the coverage of this ecological disaster implies that Harvard University not only condones this behavior, but participates at the executive level. I am saddened by this observation...

After leaving Harvard, I visited Rhodesia and South Africa as a journalist and was thrown out of the latter country for interviewing Albert Luthuli, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, who had been banned by the South African government. Then as now, the South African government was hell-bent on destroying every African leader who showed his head. The system there will not reform itself from within...
