Light and sound are, of course, the building blocks of any movie, and "Germinal" is no exception. Deprivation of the former and an incessance of the latter combine to make this movie a misery. The audience is constantly thrust into the dim pits of the mine, lighted only by occasional hell-fires, and thrown into unillumined cottages with at most a single candle burning in the corner. By the end of the film, everyone in the audience is not only familiar with the nuances of pre-electric lighting but feel that they have experienced it first hand. The movie grates...
