Montaldo is generally faithful to historical documentation. But toward the end of the film, he makes one unforgiveable addition that undermines the entire thrust of his argument. He invents a scene between Vanzetti and Massachusetts Governor Fuller in which the convicted anarchist is asked to justify his request for a reprieve from the electric chair. During the course of their conversation, Fuller reveals that it is ultimately a political consideration--beyond any question of guilt or innocence--that makes it impossible to grant Vanzetti's request. Vanzetti is an anarchist; anarchists cannot be tolerated; Vanzetti must die. At this point...
White, on the other hand, has relied on his campaign machine rather than on his personality to win the election--an approach which his weekly polls tell him is working well. The primary thrust of his organization is a canvass of almost all 152,000 voters in the city, using computers to discover the issues most important to different groups of voters. His campaign manager John P. Marttila, who also ran Father Drinan's campaign last year, last week denied the charge that the campaign lacked the personal touch, "What could be more personal than going door to door...
Newman's whole bearing suggested a seignioral poise-the big square head thrust forward, the snowy walrus mustache, the steel-rimmed monocle dangling on a black ribbon that neatly bisected his shirt front, vertical black on white, like a detail from one of his own pictures. This was fitting; when he died last year at 65, he left a body of work that seemed the epitome of aristocratic breadth and daring. Newman's canvases, with their engulfing fields of color traversed by vertical "zips," had become intrinsic to the look of American painting. Artists as diverse...
...Since World War II, espionage has undergone a metamorphosis. For a time, its stars were the famed "illegal" or "deep cover" agents?the Colonel Abels, the Gorden Lonsdales, the Kim Philbys. Says British Sovietologist Robert Conquest: "These men compare with the massive embassy operations rather as a skilled armored thrust compares with human-wave tactics in war." Moreover, the growing phalanxes of routine operatives are supported by spy-in-the-sky satellites that can send back photographs showing the precise diameter of a newly dug missile silo. But even as the modern army still needs the foot soldier, so does...
...overcapacity, they cut back on new orders this year. The Defense Department also continues to reduce purchases as the Viet Nam War winds down. Moreover, technical problems until recently held up development of a more powerful engine for Boeing's 747, and production of an engine with more thrust for General Dynamics' F-l 11 fighter-bomber is behind schedule...
