...eBay's only full-time employee, Omidyar soon found himself thrust into a new and unwanted role: grievance officer. Buyers and sellers with complaints about each other were e-mailing him personally and asking him to step in. Omidyar urged them to work things out amicably between themselves. But if eBayers really had to gripe, he decided, they should do it publicly on the site. "I wanted to reinforce the notion that if you're going to bring a complaint about someone, do it out in the open," says Omidyar. "You can't come running to Daddy...

Fortunately, the aging of the baby boomers is also creating a boom of services (many of them free) for people thrust into the caregiver's role. Geriatric-case managers can offer all kinds of practical assistance to a family in need, from coordinating home health care to providing financial and emotional counseling. The local Office of the Aging, or Eldercare Locator (800-677-1116), can assign local case managers for families who live at a distance. Two particularly helpful Internet sites are www.AgeNet.com and www.aoa.gov...

...only way of investigating the seriousness of the relationship is via the physical act of love--and in this sense, The End of the Affair has love to spare. Rarely in an American film has sex been depicted with such frankness and frequency. Crotches are grabbed, hips are rhythmically thrust and even Ralph's pale, well-formed bottom makes an extended appearance. But something is amiss in these scenes--the sex is cold and mechanical, and feels overly choreographed. Since Jordan gives us little else to define the relationship by, it's difficult to feel emotionally involved in the film...

...history is their guide, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) staff will take a hard look at a problematic piece of equipment on the Boeing 767--the thrust reverser. These devices slow the aircraft down during landing by reversing the airflow from the engines. And while the devices are great for shortening landing rolls--or stopping a plane during an aborted takeoff--they can be deadly if accidentally deployed in flight. In 1991 a thrust reverser on a Lauda Air Boeing 767 deployed in midair, sending the plane into a death plunge over Thailand. That...

Despite such speculation, the case for an accidental thrust-reverser deployment is weak, at least for now. When a reverser is accidentally deployed, "one side of the plane is going forward, the other side is going backward," explains Boeing spokeswoman Lori Gunter. The plane would likely have exhibited the kind of jerky push-pull motion that characterized the Lauda Air jet's descent in 1991. The radar indicates, however, that Flight 990 nosedived in a straight line in its original descent. And if the pilots faced such a problem, they should have had time to send out a distress signal...
