...have taken the place of Redux as his main output for 69-70. Based on the life of James Buchanan--interestingly enough, the only president to have been born and raised in Pennsylvania--the novel is meant to explore the tensions of a man of personal integrity thrust into a position of national power at a time when his actual strength was limited--and threatened by the cataclysms of pre-Civil War America. Buchanan had successfully risen above personal traumas in his love-life, and in a tawdry Pennsylvania political arena; he got caught in the mire of an unfinished...
...newly built roads running into the country across the Laotian border and through the Demilitarized Zone. Hanoi's crack 320th Division has been spotted moving south, along with some 50 tanks, toward South Viet Nam's weak Military Region II (the Central Highlands), where the main Communist thrust is expected. Already, three North Vietnamese regiments are grouped in Binh Dinh province, which is rated as the least secure of the country's 44 provinces. The mild hysteria underlying each of these courses seems born and bred at Disneyland. In the new Academic environment, the experience is given a new theoretical and often satirical thrust, but there still remains the intrinsic fascination of the possibility of technology to alter states of consciousness, or in the words of Walt Disney, "to make people feel they're in another world." The imagineers of Disneyland, of course, never say what they mean to do with all their rides...
...better that we've been deprived of some illusions, stripped of the comforting passivity of political idolatry, forced to see the New Frontier and the Alliance for Progress as a sham, compelled to recite eulogies for the War on Poverty and for the Great Society, and thrust into the reality, again, of war's immorality, seeing the innocent we've killed and living we've helped destroy. Still, there was some good in feeling some value in believing that we would grow up to join the war to end social injustice, in believing that somehow, for some reason, we were...
