When the folks back home opened up their magazines to pictures of the summit, the Reagan suit hit them in the eye like an errant thumb. One reader phoned Washington to ask if the suit had deeper diplomatic significance. Cocktail parties on both coasts pondered Reagan's sartorial splendor...
...blasted back into the past with Tattoo You, certainly the best rock and roll album ever put out by a bunch of guys in their forties. They are now back to where they started, reviving Eddie Cochran and Smokey Robinson on Still Life and shamelessly churning through "Under My Thumb" and "Let's Spend the Night Together" while millions upon millions bellow their approval. In their latest incarnation as rock archivists, the Stones are once again leading the U.S. back to its own great heritage. And by this time, part of what they're bringing home and introducing...
Still Life unfortunately does not capture fully the excitement of the 1981 tour a trans-continental jaunt which reaffirmed the Stones' ability to provide the best material in the field even in their dotage. The album is so cleanly recorded and finely re-mixed that pieces like "Under My Thumb" and "Let's Spend the Night Together" lose some of their bite, particularly the latter, which sounds downright cheerful. Valle said, "The reflexes weren...
...best player is an uncomplicated farm hand, a real "Hick from French Lick [Ind.]." (Jerry West probably never really was-and certainly never wanted to be-"Zeke from Cabin Creek [W. Va.].") When asked the condition of a busted thumb or punctured cheekbone, Bird naturally replies: "Broke." Long, loose-limbed and 25, he shambles when he walks. His hair is as ruly as alfalfa and his complexion as adolescent as measles. From top to bottom, a distance measured to be 6 ft. 9 in., Bird could not be whiter if he were a professional blood donor. His yellow mustache suggests...
