Like nearly all of its predecessors, Wizard has a set of features, switched by a series of roll-overs, that mean the difference between assured victory and inevitable defeat: Thumper Bumper, Center Target, Double Bonus and Spinner. But to send a ball rolling over the roll-overs, at the upper right of the machine, is not enough to trigger the features--first, a set of flags associated with the roll-overs must themselves be triggered, by a set of targets spread across the surface of the machine...
...backboard, could not preside over a scene of more nearly apocalyptic import. It will never again be possible to construct a pinball machine with the relatively simple patterns we are familiar with--one bumper, regardless of sequence, predictably changing the value of another. In Wizard, only after the Thumper Bumper target is hit, or the Center Target target, are the appropriate flags flipped and roll-overs activated. And only then can the roll-overs activate their respective functions. The relationships of the many elements of the pinball surface have taken on an immeasurable new dimension here--the thumper bumper...
...distinct voices: the Chancellor, dignified and statesmanlike; the Social Democratic Party leader, impassioned and hard-hitting. At the S.P.D.'s party congress in Hannover last week, it was clear that Willy No. 1 had stayed home in stately old Bonn. Willy No. 2, the angry table thumper, was in charge. It was the first major test of Brandt's leadership since last November's elections, and Brandt faced a challenge from his party's young Marxist wing, led by Jungsozialisten (Juso) Chief Wolfgang Roth. The Juso faction demanded a number of fundamental changes that would push...
...means of flashbacks, Pope Joan correlates the legend with the life of the young evangelist: the nunnery is inter cut with a modern orphanage, Joan's monk father with a back-country Bible thumper, and so on. Invention frequently flags, and there are great barren stretches of the movie that contain no contemporary parallels whatever, presumably because the scenario could invent no 20th century equivalents for the Saxons or the intrigues of the papal court under Leo, who is zestfully portrayed by Trevor Howard...
...placed diamond smugglers who operate in Las Vegas. Somehow mixed up in all this are an eccentric millionaire recluse (hello there, Howard Hughes), a wizened stand-up comic, a crooked mortician, a couple of campy killers named Wint and Kidd, and two bikinied bodyguards who call themselves Bambi and Thumper. They strike a gymnastic blow for Women's Lib by effortlessly bouncing Bond, the sexist pig, off the four walls of a luxurious desert hideaway...
