...biggest blunder was made by Angelo Sepe, 37, a mob-connected hood who was on parole from an armed-robbery conviction. Unable to resist enjoying his new wealth, he ordered a sporty 1979 Thunderbird -and paid for the car with $9,000 in cash. He also bought a new Cadillac for his girlfriend. Before he picked up the T-bird, however, FBI agents fitted it with an eavesdropping bug and a small radio transmitter that constantly signaled its whereabouts. Sepe's next mistake was to boast about the Lufthansa caper to passengers in his car -taped conversations that...
There is a little poetic embellishment to the above scene, but it is pretty close to the picture of how-things-might-have-been that emerges from the relaxed mind of Gerald Ford, ensconced last week at the edge of Thunderbird's glorious fairways in Palm Springs. When the Lonette McKee character agrees to live with Leroy, for instance, she plays the scene with Mediterranean fire in her eye and makes him promise never to sleep with another woman. That's not Los Angeles in 1977, and sure enough, it turns out that Which Way Is Up? is an adaptation of Lina Wertmuller's 1972 comedy The Seduction of Mimi, which is set in Sicily...
