...tidal waves were murderous. At Beverly Beach State Park near Depoe Bay, Ore., four children who had been asleep in bedrolls were swept away. In Crescent City, Calif., the shock waves sent the sea pouring into the downtown sector to wreck 150 stores. Four gasoline storage plants exploded and burned. Three thousand townspeople fled; ten were drowned, 70 hurt, more than 50 missing. Near Los Angeles, 10-ft. waves damaged the coast of Santa Catalina Island. In Hawaii, residents of the city of Hilo fled to high ground as six huge waves lashed the shores...

Lights & Inner Tubes. But try to catch one. No fish has a greater ability to bewilder, bedevil, confuse and confound a fisherman, and none, pound for pound, fights harder. Because it inhabits exposed tidal flats, the bonefish is a nervous wreck-always on the lookout for enemies, spooking at the shadow of a bird overhead, fleeing in panic from the sound of a beer can being opened. Ever so stealthily, the bonefisherman tiptoes across the flats, taking care not to step on sting rays, his freshly baited hook (live shrimp is tasty) all ready, his eyes peeled for a waving...

What Wood Can Say. But Frasconi can be lyrical as well as grim. His studio in Norwalk, Conn., looks out on Long Island Sound and a chain of tidal flats that swarm with migratory birds in spring and fall. In a colorful 1959 se quence, Frasconi shows the crisp, yel low marshland laced with long black lines of birds that seem to pulsate on the paper. Denuded trees float above the steel-blue water, which itself ripples with the grain of the wood. His Homage to Francisco Sabater, honoring the anti-Franco bandit slain in 1960, shows the same respect...

...nature, incredibly compounded by man, all the warnings proved futile. By the time Flora finished her ten-day rampage through the Caribbean, she went down in history as one of the most devastating storms ever to strike the Western Hemisphere-a killer comparable to the great Galveston storm and tidal wave that swept the Texas coast in September 1900, claiming more than 6,000 lives...

...most of Longarone's inhabitants slept or watched a soccer game on television, a huge chunk of a nearby mountain called Toe broke loose and fell 650 ft. into the 873-ft.-high Vaiont Dam, 2½ miles from the town. The splash sent a 300-ft.-high tidal wave across the reservoir. Spilling over the lip, the avalanche of water cascaded into a gorge leading to the nearby Piave River. It churned up tons of rock and mud, and hit Longarone. Then the flood bounced off a mountainside, turned around, hit Longarone again, and continued down the Piave...
