Like a giant tidal wave refusing to crest, technology stocks soared. Investors poured money into the market without thinking twice, and the entire economy surged forward. Every idea was a new source of money, and stories of Harvard grads making millions trickled down to those of us just starting our college careers...
LOOKING SWEET According to local legend, the 1,268 Chocolate Hills of Bohol were formed when a giant shed tears upon learning his lover had died. Scientists insist they are vestiges of a millennia-old tidal pattern. Whatever their origins, the hills look like a sea of 30-m-tall, slightly melted Hershey's Kisses, especially in the dry season (December to May) when they turn a rich chocolaty brown. To see the hills up close, arrange a motorbike tour from the nearby town of Carmen, in the center of the island...
...public. The choice: The so-called Tadpole Galaxy. Earth-based telescopes had captured what appeared to be a galaxy some 420 million light years away that had crossed paths with a dense dwarf galaxy, resulting in a long tail of stars and galactic debris spun off by tidal forces. NASA knew Hubble should be able to show individual stars inside the galaxy, quite a feat at such a distance, about 200 times that of the nearest galaxy to our own Milky Way. It was a conservative choice, though. Visually interesting, scientifically significant, but hardly ground-breaking...
...CONSUMERS Through the recession, shoppers' confidence stayed strong and spending barely declined, thanks in part to low interest rates and wide discounting, including 0% car loans. Incredibly, a third of all outstanding mortgages were originated last year--testament to the tidal wave of home refinancings that, on average, lowered homeowners' monthly payments by $100. Those who refinanced cashed out $100 billion of equity, says Frank Nothaft, chief economist at Freddie Mac. But, says Zurich Scudder's Allyn, the cash outs "are a little like eating your seed corn. It's not a long-term solution." Moreover, the refi boom...
...Beck, and the phenomenal success of Mellow Gold and Odelay spurred record companies to court her next catch aggressively. After being wined and dined by more than a dozen labels, Lord decided to sign with The Work Group, a Sony label that had released Fiona Apple’s Tidal and several albums from Jamiroquai. The Mary Lou Lord with little more to her name than a guitar and a futon was no more—she had become a big-league recording artist with a six-figure advance, a manager and a booking agent...
