With Christian Democrat Helmut Kohl recently installed as Chancellor of West Germany and Socialist Prime Minister Francois Mitterrand facing formidable opposition in France, the Tory triumph stirred talk of a rising conservative tide in Western Europe. The election is also heartening for Ronald Reagan, whose resolutely anti-Soviet foreign policy and free-market economic philosophy are shared by Thatcher. As he weighs a second term, Reagan cannot help noting that Thatcher scored points for bringing down inflation but did not seem to lose many for failing to cut the worrisome unemployment rate...

...began to sense that there might be a sexual counterrevolution under way in America." Cosmopolitan Editor Helen Gurley Brown, never one to miss a sexual trend, says, "Sex with commitment is absolutely delicious. Sex with your date for the evening is not so marvelous?too casual, too meaningless." The tide of conservative prose, in fact, has become too much for Playboy. An article in the December issue grumpily complains that scribbling erotophobes are out to restore Puritanism in America. That and other challenges appear to have caused Sarkozy to blink at long last. On Wednesday, leaders of protesting taxi drivers were called to the Elysée and assured the deregulation plans had been shelved. And despite Sarkozy's avowal in December that state "coffers are empty," the presidency also announced new handouts for retirees receiving minimal pensions - a demographic pollsters count...

...Romney's greatest campaign assets is his relentless optimism. His vow to fight on to the convention was less delusional than constitutional; he genuinely believes the tide is always about to turn in his favor. But Romney is also a former management consultant, a numbers-cruncher unlikely to remain a candidate if he concludes that winning is no longer a serious possibility. At the very least, Super Tuesday reminded him of the difference between three...
