...However, the MLB Network's 50 million homes give it unprecedented scale. The other league-owned and -operated sports channels still haven't hit baseball's numbers, and they've been around a lot longer. NBA TV, launched in 1999 but still relegated to the more expensive tier of sports cable channels, has only 15 million subscribers. The five-year-old NFL Network, which has waged mortal combat against cable operators for more favorable distribution terms, reaches just 42 million homes. The subscription revenues from the cable and satellite operators could keep the MLB Network buoyant in a tough advertising...

...sensation R. Kelly faced child-pornography charges after being accused of making a sex tape with a teenage girl. Genson won the case, getting Kelly acquitted of all 14 counts. And in a 2003 verdict that stunned some court observers, Genson teamed with three other top-tier lawyers to win the acquittal of Bruno Mancari, the brother of a well-known Chicago-area auto dealer, on charges he murdered a childhood pal 18 years earlier...

...extraordinary public citizen [Dec. 15]. Instead of noting that TIME once listed him as one of America's five best governors, Scherer identified Huckabee as a "Baptist pastor with crooked teeth," and "Huckabee's America" sounds like something from The Beverly Hillbillies. Those who dismissed Huckabee as a third-tier candidate when he continually argued for energy independence, infrastructure spending and better preventive health care should take a closer look at Barack Obama's priorities. Huckabee's accomplishment was inspiring, his voice was heard, and his book should be read by everyone. David E. Anderson, ELLICOTT CITY...

Among the top-tier performers are also, perhaps surprisingly, a number of banks. While it's true that plenty of finance firms have been absolutely clobbered - worst of all, nationalized housing giants Fannie Mae (down 98%, to $0.70) and Freddie Mac (down 98%, to $0.74); insurers AIG (down 97%, to $1.80) and Ambac (down 95%, to $1.38); and brokerage MF Global (down 94%, to $1.96) - operators of smaller, community banks that ostensibly didn't get caught up in so much mortgage-related fancy footwork have often thrived. Among them: Capitol Federal Financial in Kansas (up 41%, to $43.65), Tompkins Financial...

...Sorry, had to look them up. That would be VA Secretary James Peake, HUD Secretary Steve Preston and Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman. They're not exactly household names, which is why it's so weird that second-tier Cabinet appointees get so much attention initially; they rarely make much news once they're in office. That's why I've proposed shrinking the Cabinet, which has doubled in size yet probably halved in importance since the Kennedy Administration. But that's one thing Obama does not appear likely to change. Judging by his appointments thus far, the Cabinet will continue...
