...face of dictatorship in Cuba was the padlock on Havana University, the bodies dumped on street corners by casual police terrorists, the arrogant functionaries gathering fortunes from gambling, prostitution and a leaky public till. In disgust and shame, a nervy band of rural guerrillas, aided by angry Havana professional men (plus opportunists with assorted motives), started a bloody civil war that cost more than $100 million and took 8,000 lives. Last week they smashed General Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship...
...keep the project secret, and secret it was: no more than 88 people ever knew of it. One day early last week, a few Army Signal Corps technicians showed up discreetly in the President's office, recorded the satellite message that Ike himself had written, tucked it away till it was needed at Cape Canaveral. Even the button pusher who fired the Atlas from the Cape blockhouse did not know that the bird contained the tape recording, or that it had been set to orbit. ...dazzling world of the London theater. Inevitably, Alex steps through Playwright Bliss's looking glass, when she goes to work for him as his secretary. Bliss is an homme fatal, one of those men three-quarters of whose present consists of past. For all his lostness, he seems an essentially comic type till suddenly-out of Winesburg, Ohio more than Worcester, Mass.-he kills himself. Earlier, Behrman nowhere sounds the few right notes that might anticipate such dark final chords; from the beginning, in fact, Willie is all flat surface. The flatness is really general; that Willie is joltingly tragic matters less than that...
Among the enthusiasts are heard voices of denial. "I'm settled where I am, and the thought of a new start is only vaguely persuasive. The activities may never get started till I'm a five year alumnus." "Really, activities don't mean a thing, it was the icebox that convinced me and the elevator; this kind of thing you can't pass up." (Strangely enough, the "ice-box set" seems rather small, though active...
