"You can read through every financial statement in the world and have absolutely no clue as to the risks they are taking," says Leo Tilman, a former Bear Stearns strategist who now runs the advisory firm L.M. ...finest art critics, I always read his articles with great interest. However, I was surprised that in his sensitive review of ''Gothic and Renaissance Art in Nuremberg, 1300-1550'' (ART, May 26), he spoke eloquently of Sculptor Veit Stoss but not so much as mentioned the master's contemporary, Tilman Riemenschneider. It is true that the latter hailed not from Nuremberg but from nearby Wurzburg, yet all the qualities Hughes admires in Stoss's work can be found in Riemenschneider's extraordinary wood carvings. ...science world assumed biofuels would be grown in parking lots. The deforestation of Indonesia has shown that's not the case. It turns out that the carbon lost when wilderness is razed overwhelms the gains from cleaner-burning fuels. A study by University of Minnesota ecologist David Tilman concluded that it will take more than 400 years of biodiesel use to "pay back" the carbon emitted by directly clearing peat lands to grow palm oil; clearing grasslands to grow corn for ethanol has a payback period of 93 years. ...feed us or the carbon storage needed to save us. Searchinger acknowledges that biofuels can be a godsend if they don't use arable land. Possible feedstocks include municipal trash, agricultural waste, algae and even carbon dioxide, although none of the technologies are yet economical on a large scale. Tilman even holds out hope for fuel crops--he's been experimenting with Midwestern prairie grasses--as long as they're grown on "degraded lands" that can no longer support food crops or cattle...

...battle began, the Australians-for reasons as yet unknown-stopped firing and pulled back, allowing Reinado and his surviving men to escape through the thick rainforest on the western side of the hill. Behind them they left the bodies of Barros, Natalino Pereira, Maranes Henrique and Calisto Tilman. The body of a fifth, unidentified man was found two days after the raid, but it was unclear whether he had died of wounds or exposure. Galucho's younger brother Nikson, a former military policeman who deserted with Reinado and was reportedly devoted to him, was shot in the leg, head...
