Kissinger failed in one effort in the Middle East. He had wanted to be airborne when the treaty was signed at Kilometer 101 so that he would not be physically in either country and open to charges of favoritism (like the raft in midstream at Tilsit?). But a delay in the signing made it impossible; he was with Sadat. Successful or not, it was the kind of personal touch that has helped Henry Kissinger to stand out in these dark times...
...years, the security shield that protects the top-secret information of the West German government has had the reputation of being as full of holes as a slab of Tilsit. In fact, classified documents are so readily available in Bonn these days that a good spy need only read the daily papers. Two weeks ago, entire sections of the highly classified draft treaty between West Germany and the Soviet Union were printed in the Bildzeitung, a sheet whose ordinary preoccupations range from sex to crime...

They embraced; they exchanged decorations and pledges of friendship. Like De Gaulle, Alexander hoped to play the role of peacemaker and to divide the European continent between Russia and France. Yet by 1812 the Emperor was sleeping in the Kremlin in a burning Moscow. I wonder whether De Gaulle...
...done what Russian armies in 1914 failed to do: clamp a bear hug on the province of East Prussia. Chernyakhovsky had struck from the east and north, Rokossovsky from the southeast. They ripped through historic forests, the hunting grounds of the Kaisers, through cities rich in Prussian military lore-Tilsit, Gumbinnen, Tannenberg, Allenstein...
