...Portland, Ore., the organizing committee of Earth Day is cosponsoring local festivities with "primary resource extractors" such as timber and mining companies. In return for the companies' sponsorship, the committee has agreed to soft-pedal the environmental issue most important to the Pacific Northwest--resource extraction. In a final irony, Portland's Earth Day Fair will be held at the headquarters of PG&E, the owner of the nearby Trojan Nuclear Power Plant...

...northern spotted owl has become to the timber industry what the tiny snail darter was to dam builders -- a symbol for environmentalists, only cuter. In the 1990s, the owl may curb logging in the Pacific Northwest just as the small fish temporarily halted construction of the Tellico Dam in Tennessee. Last week a panel of federal scientists called for a halt to logging on up to 40% of the national forest land in Oregon, Washington and California to keep the owl from becoming extinct. Even so, the journey has been brutal for the animals. Fifteen of them became so exhausted that they had to be airlifted out temporarily to Patriot Hills. One of Steger's favorites, an eight-year-old named Tim who had gone with him to the North Pole, died during the blizzard...

...growth" forests in the Pacific Northwest. Conservationists contend that cutting the ancient trees on federally owned land in Oregon and Washington State threatens the habitat of the endangered spotted owl, which lives only in old-growth forests. The lumber industry objects that a ban would devastate the timber-based economies of the region. Last week George Bush signed into law a compromise hammered out by a congressional conference committee. It prohibits sales of timber from areas where the spotted owl dwells, but permits 7.7 billion board feet of wood to be harvested on nearby tracts where cutting has been stalled...
