...cousins hatched in the wild will be removed. That will instantly raise the overall tally of salmon--and make it more probable that the government will eliminate or downgrade protections for 15 salmon species now sheltered under the Endangered Species Act. Such a change is favored by power and timber companies, whose development plans have been stymied by the government's protective net. Environmentalists complain that the action will jeopardize the survival of wild salmon...

...Burma, poverty and malnutrition exist and are by some accounts increasing. Outside Mandalay, I visited the families of migrant workers who live in squalid lean-tos on the wide, refuse-strewn banks of the Irrawaddy River. They labor for subsistence wages, shoveling sand from dredging boats or hauling illegal timber. Often there's not enough work to go around, and sometimes?for example, when the dredgers run out of fuel?there's none at all. Sickness is everywhere. Rosgen's drive to restore rivers was born of rage. As a young Forest Service worker, he was assigned to inspect an area in his native north Idaho. There, he saw a pristine stream that had been ruined by runoff from timber clear cutting. It's a real estate play with a 6% dividend for safety...

Complaint No. 2 is the beaver's maniacal devotion to felling trees, which provide it with food and building material. An adult can gnaw through a tree six inches in diameter in 15 minutes. In the Southeast, beavers cause millions of dollars of damage to timber forests every year. In 1999 a squad of bucktoothed renegades in Washington started toppling cherry trees along the Tidal Basin, putting at risk the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. (When the National Park Service relocated the colony to an undisclosed location, then Idaho Congresswoman Helen Chenoweth, a die-hard foe of reintroducing the wolf...
