Neither science nor fiction, A Book of Dreams inhabits its own special and highly vulnerable reality. The truth of what young Reich says he experienced is rooted in the timeless mysteries of fathers and sons, where the literal and the mythic cannot always be distinguished. Peter Reich the man makes no effort to do so. Molded by the overwhelming fact that the world did not accept and love his father as unquestioningly as he did, he cannot and does not want to intellectualize his past. ...thought of wine and grinned to herself. The world is a broken Ripple bottle. Yes, yes, a ripped apart Ripple bottle. Some still glistening fragment attracted her eye and absorbed her. Timeless. Rhythm of timelessness; timeless ocean waves. Her endless drift of unconcerned thinking. A sailing without a goal, or known beginning. There are, of course, several negative unifying factors: Ziolkowski ignores most of them...

Says Mike Murphy a founder of the Esalen Institute: "The essential lessons Don Juan has to teach are the timeless ones that have been taught by the great sages of India and the spiritual masters of modern times " Author Alan Watts argues that Castaneda's books offer an alternative to both the guilt-ridden Judaeo-Chns-tian and the blindly mechanistic views of man-"Don Juan's way regards...
