WASHINGTON, D.C.: The House continues to tinker with a controversial immigration bill as it nears an expected floor vote Friday. Representatives added an amendment that would permit state and local law enforcement agencies to detain illegal aliens for the Immigration and Naturalization Service and retained a pilot program that lets employers call an INS hotline to check the employability of workers. However, the key addition was an amendment sponsored by Representative Elton Gallegly, which would allow states to bar the children of illegal immigrants from public schools. Liberals, on the other hand, believe conservatives are dangerous romantics.
