Nationalization's Price. Bolivia's far-reaching revolution of 1952 gave land to virtually enslaved Indians and nationalized the mines of the rich tin barons who dominated the country. But land reform drastically cut farm output, and nationalization of the tin companies boomeranged as production slipped from 33,664 tons in 1951 to 27,435 in 1956. With fewer goods than before to pay for these social advances, Bolivia in a single year more than tripled the amount of paper money in circulation...

...Marshal Zhukov and U.S. defense officials. Readers reported mysterious flying objects that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram promptly dubbed whatniks. Photographers posed Skye terriers and Airedales in front of telescopes, concocted such whatniks of their own as the Knoxville Journal's cut of a space platform with Rin Tin Tin in the driver's seat...

Teresa Wright does as much with the role of Cora as nearly anyone could. Pat Hingle acts Rubin as solidly as he did Gooper in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Eileen Heckart, as Lottie, impresses many people as magnificent--a loosely jointed, many-toned caricature actress a la Roz Russel. She is often most amusing, often overdone. As a friend of Reenie's, Evans Evans is wacky, flappery, and fun, except in her emotional scene, where she seems hollow...

With three of its characters evoking Tennessee Williams' Glass Menagerie, the play has also the three-pronged subject matter of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. An elderly, genteelly despotic Southern mother has badly hurt her daughter and her son-the daughter is an all-tied-up-in-knots old maid; the son a psychotically bitter, frustrated writer. The son has in turn badly hurt the simple girl (Anne Baxter) who twice, from sheer sexual compulsion, became his unhappy wife. Divorced now, he comes from a mental home to break in upon her romance with an uncomplicated architect...

...Fonda is an aging ex-sheriff, disillusioned with the lawman's life. Tony Perkins is a nice young Sunday-go-to-meetin' sort of feller who has just been chosen sheriff, and who discovers to his horror that there is more to the job than wearing a tin star. The story develops as the oldtimer, much against his will, is drawn by sympathy into an attempt to teach the young comer how to be a proper lawman-before he becomes a dead...
