...different in the spring of 1963, Mrs. Hicks might never have delivered the speech she gave Monday night, and might not even be sitting on the School Committee today. But in 1963, during the second year of her first School Committee term, Mrs. Hicks was chosen committee chairman, hence titular head of the entire school system. She had been elected to the Committee in 1961, considering herself a reformer. Recently she told an Atlantic reporter that she had run for the School Committee because of a long family interest in civic affairs (her father was a prominent Boston judge...

While the success of Eisenhower's visit may once again demonstrate Johnson's political opportunism, it will contribute nothing to the achievement of a negotiated peace in Vietnam. The present Administration policy is not aimed in that direction, and its constant reiteration by the titular leader of the opposing party will do nothing to help change it. Instead, the use of Eisenhower as a vehicle for Johnson's policy will undercut any Republican in the next two years who proposes a Vietnam policy more oriented toward negotiations than the Administration's. And should any Republican attempt to run against...

Kennedy staffers in key Upstate cities are spending all their time on the O'Connor campaign. The Senator himself will appear with O'Connor in places like Buffalo and Syracuse, for he knows that an O'Connor victory, on the strength of Kennedy bloc votes, will make the junior Senator unquestionably the strongest...

Jakobovits, who accepted the $19,600-a-year post last week, will become titular chief of a Jewish community rich in both tradition and troubles. Jews emigrated to Britain from France as early as the 11th century. Driven into exile 200 years later, the Jews returned during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, have since blossomed into one of the world's wealthiest and least persecuted Judaic communities. By the 19th century, the Rothschilds, Montagus and Samuelses made Jews a force to reckon with in British finance. Today, 40 members of Parliament are Jews, as well as 61 knights...
