We came up with America Online, Netscape, Amazon, Google, Blogger, Wikipedia, Craigslist, TiVo, Netflix, eBay, the iPod and iPhone, Xbox, Facebook and Twitter itself. Sure, we didn't build the Prius or the Wii, but if you measure global innovation in terms of actual lifestyle-changing hit products and not just grad students, the U.S. has been lapping the field for the past 20 years...
...sociology and wit sure to appeal to TV-food addicts, though kitchen novices might feel overwhelmed by the dense subject matter and obsessively detailed descriptions of lesser-known chefs and their programs. Still, it's a topic rich enough to reward deeper study - all the more reason to Tivo the next season of Top Chef...
...other way is to program TV for the shrinking, but still substantial group of people who don't want TV to change. As for the loss of being able to make small talk with the mailman over who shot J.R. - I'll trade it for Mad Men and the ability to skip ads with TiVo. We'll find something else to talk about.
