...recent article on the dangers of cholesterol [Jan. 10] shocked me. The ultimate civil liberty in a democratic society is the power over one's own life and death, and I cannot see why the Government should restrict cholesterol any more than it restricts equally "lethal" alcohol and tobacco. Let us have a program of education, by all means, but allow us to "choose our poison." You may have nicotine, and I'll take bacon and butter...
Because the cast is superior, there is no scenery chewing. There is tobacco chewing, though, when Childie humbles herself before George and crunches a cigar butt in her mouth. The sound track plays Smoke Gets in Your Eyes while a Winston kind of couple revels in a shipboard romance. Cut. A Salem-style twosome, high on tobacco and each other, enjoy an apres-ski spree. How can such a splice-up of burnt-out cliches sell cigarettes? That's the point. The voiceover during the 60-second spot has been saying right along: "Cigarette smoke contains some interesting elements: carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, benzopyrene, hydrogen cyanide. Cigarette smoke...
