Joseph Nye Welch, 69, Iowa-born Boston barrister who on coast-tocoast TV gently and repeatedly needled the late Senator Joseph McCarthy into fury during the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings; of a heart attack; in Hyannis, Mass.
