...Burmese government admits that 10 people were killed in last week’s protests, although British and Australian officials say the real death toll is many times higher. Unfortunately, last week’s murders were only the latest in a long list of egregious human rights violations perpetrated by the junta. Well over 1,000 pro-democracy activists—including Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi—are now being held in prison and under house arrest. Even more disconcertingly, the Burmese military has destroyed more than 200 villages in the ethnic-minority Karen...
Burma is not Sudan. Some observers believe that the Burmese junta’s campaign against ethnic minorities is a “genocide” under international law, but the death toll has not yet reached Darfur’s horrific heights. Still, Harvard should take little solace in the fact that the Burmese government has killed thousands (as opposed to hundreds of thousands) of its own people. The same “pattern of circumstances” characterizing the PetroChina-Sudan relationship is also present in the Chevron-Burma tie. Just as PetroChina’s parent company...
...church's sexual-abuse scandal has also taken its toll. Catholics felt that the bishops--many of them accused of enabling pedophile priests--were arrogantly evading the same kind of penance they demand from their flocks. "The very teachers of the sacrament of confession seemed to be ignoring a constitutive part of that sacrament," says the Rev. James Martin, associate editor of the Jesuit-run magazine America. "It made the confession crisis worse." Wuerl, who in fact was praised for taking a hard line on abusive priests, concedes that those are "significant issues." But he also believes that Catholics...
...Iraq. It has been a long, strange trip: the V-22 has been 25 years in development, more than twice as long as the Apollo program that put men on the moon. V-22 crashes have claimed the lives of 30 men - 10 times the lunar program's toll - all before the plane has seen combat. The Pentagon has put $20 billion into the Osprey and expects to spend an additional $35 billion before the program is finished. In exchange, the Marines, Navy and Air Force will get 458 aircraft, averaging $119 million per copy...
...while expeditious review and expanded quotas are urgently needed, they will not affect the welfare of the several million Iraqis who have lost their homes and their livelihoods. If the Administration is to ease the toll on Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan and Syria and persuade them to welcome Iraqis in need, it must extend massive assistance to those governments to help fund shelter, food, sanitation, health care and transportation for arriving Iraqis. Among the 200,000 Iraqi children who have fled to Jordan, only 20,000 started school in the past year, and 6,000 of them dropped...
