Ophelia Bottoms (Jason Tomarken) is engaged to marry Sir Cumference (you guessed it; he's fat), although Ophelia hates her round suitor. Meanwhile her aunt, Lady Andatramp (Michael Starr) is plotting for her own daughter, Jane Eyrehead (Glenn Kaiser) to catch the rich bachelor. But Sir Cumference (Daniel Zelman) is only rich because he drove Ophelia's brother, Captain Acaje (Andrew Dietderich), crazy and so stands to inherit the Bottoms' family fortune and estate...
Perhaps even more notable is the performance of Jason Tomarken, who plays a variety of roles. As Orin, the sadistic dentist who is Audrey's boyfriend in the first act, Tomarken is a scream. Orin is an inherently amusing character, but Tomarken brings him memorably to life. His "Dentist" is one of the musical's finest numbers. Tomarken's other portrayals are equally unique and enjoyable...
...musical is not without its flaws. Chiffon (Roxanne Lockhart), Crystal (Melanie Sarino) and Ronette (Ketanji Brown), the show's girl group-style Greek chorus, open the show with a rendition of the title song that is more yelled than sung. Their support of Tomarken during "Dentist" is good, but the quality of their performances fluctuates wildly, and this is a problem which most of the cast shares...
...strange bit justifies-to the extent that a Pudding plot requires-Lyfe's complicity in an elaborate hoax masterminded by billionaire "horseshoe magnate" Richard Denuar (Jason Tomarken). Uncertain of his family's affection in his declining years, Denuar hits upon a clever scheme to test the love of his four daughters and sixth wife: He will feign illness and then stage his own funeral to learn his family's true feelings. Only those who love him for himself will earn a share of his fortune...
This year's no exception. Blackstone's Barb Dwyer, with Wicked-Wanda breasts and sinister snarl, is a formidable presence. Jason Tomarken, as Denuar, knows he's playing a stock character and plays with enthusiasn. But Michael Starr, as the billionaire's sixth wife, Libby Doe, turns in a-dare I say sensual?-rendition that few performers could manage. Although my only qualification to judge the performers is a stint covering the Theater of the Absurd that is Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Dianne Ferratwinkie (Maurice "Mo" Rocca) is the clear stand-out among Denuar's daughters.
