Going to the Dogs Some scientists acquired their fascination with dogs directly, but Hare's grew out of his research on chimpanzee cognition in the late 1990s, when he was part of a team of primatologists led by Michael Tomasello, now at Max Planck. A chimp can follow the gaze of other chimps and figure out what they can and cannot see. That's a skill that seems to be limited to great apes and humans. Tomasello and his team wondered if such a rare ability extended to hand gestures and tested chimps to see if they could understand pointing...

...apparent explanation for these results was that pointing--and the social smarts behind it--required a humans-only level of intelligence and evolved in our ancestors only after they branched off from the ancestors of chimpanzees some 7 million years ago. When Tomasello suggested this idea to Hare, however, Hare demurred. "I said, 'Um, Mike, I think my dogs can do that,'" Hare recalls...

Something About The Girl, now at the Bernard Toale Gallery, takes a refreshing look at the life of female identity in photography. Curator Julien Tomasello rightly chose to include a single piece (or series) by each of the seven artists represented, making the show an intimate dialogue between the pieces. Among the four men and three women photographers are two of my favorites, David Hilliard and Francesca Woodman. Also represented is Linn Underhill, who uses herself as her own model. She dresses up to look like a debonair of the late '40s, reversing the concept of drag queen to drag...

Joining a police stakeout in the neighborhood, Tomasello spotted Stander riding a bicycle. After a short chase, the cornered fugitive raised his arms and shouted, "I give up!" Then he seized Patrolman Michael Von Stetina's shotgun and pointed it at the officer. Von Stetina killed Stander with three pistol shots. Even South Africa's Minister of Justice seemed saddened by the demise of his erstwhile nemesis, sending condolences to Stander's family...
