...lower end, of course, some Neapolitan art can be as wearisome as any other self-conscious piece of "life enhancement." Like routine mezzogiorno cooking, all tomato paste and burnt garlic, it was not meant for an educated palate. But the remarkable thing about this show is how, time and again, it surprises one with some unexpected dramatic subtlety. The expression on Salome's face in Preti's The Feast of Herod, for instance, is worthy of Rembrandt in its shadowed play of emotion...

Located on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, Paris' poshest shopping avenue, Minim's features the miniwich, a two-bite sandwich for seven francs (about $1) that is stuffed with such fillings as goose liver pâté or tomato and Gruyère cheese. For a little more than $3, patrons can partake of "eggplant caviar" in an avocado boat or hearts of palm peppered with paprika. ...with a wonderfully implausible premise owes much to its richly realized background. Hoffman lent it some of his autobiography: a young actor struggling to be serious in the alternately flighty and tough world of show biz. Michael Dorsey is the kind of fellow who overthinks the role of a tomato on a commercial and quits an off-Broadway show because he does not want his character to die where the director wants him to. He is, as his agent (wonderfully played by Director Pollack) tells him, "a cult failure." Michael's friends include his playwright-roommate, superbly underacted...
