Astronomer Wolfhard Schlosser and Historian Werner Bergmann of Ruhr-University Bochum, in West Germany, were led to their conclusion by the discovery of references to Sirius in the chronicles of a Frankish bishop, Gregory of Tours. Written around A.D. 577, Gregory's tome was designed to provide monasteries with clear instructions for setting their predawn prayer schedules; thus it listed for each month the time that certain constellations would rise above the horizon. From the rise times and periods of visibility, the researchers report in the journal Nature, they were able to identify Sirius, which Gregory called Rubeola or Robeola...
Those poor Washington wives, as the style pages are always reporting, lead powerless lives of frustrating invisibility. Ah, but they are watching, watching, watching and, it appears, getting ready to write books. The latest tome will in fact be called Washington Wives, a "real-view, behind-the-scenes" novel that is now being written by Maureen Dean, 40. The wife of Watergate Defendant John Dean is a stockbroker living in Beverly Hills (and John is an investment banker). ...page tome is primarily a collection of speeches, letters and interviews granted since Gorbachev assumed Soviet leadership last March. New material includes a brief introduction by the author, a reverent biography supplied by the Kremlin and eight pages of color photographs. The most unusual are informal shots of the Gorbachev family taken during a vacation, an almost revolutionary development, considering that Westerners had to wait until Soviet Leader Yuri Andropov's funeral to be sure that he even had a wife...
...Tome and Principe, two islands that compose a former Portuguese colony south of Nigeria, Rosenblum visits the cacao plantations of Claudio Corallo, who, like all cacao-growers, loses 21 percent of his crop to disease and 25 percent to pests. His house has no electricity, and his day starts at 5 a.m. and lasts past sundown. Despite this, Corallo’s situation is probably preferable to the backbreaking labor his employees endure. And yet he sees few of the tremendous profits collected by the large chocolate companies that compete for his beans...
