...made since his first film, Spanking the Monkey, two years ago. An alternately droll and disturbing work about mother-son incest, it became a cult hit. His new film, Flirting with Disaster, establishes Russell as a unique comic voice. The movie boasts a name cast that includes Alda, Lily Tomlin and Mary Tyler Moore, as well as such Gen-X faves as Patricia Arquette and Ben Stiller. Oh, and dyed-in-the-wool George Segal fans will have a reason to go to the movies again...

...belle (with, naturally, a glass menagerie) who conceived Mel on a warehouse floor? Could Dad possibly be this truck-driving former Hell's Angel? Mel should be so lucky. For he turns out to be the get of the Schlictings (Alan Alda--as deliriously offcast as Moore--and Lily Tomlin), '60s dropouts who remain dangerously loyal to certain bad habits of their generation...

...expectations. "The Celluloid Closet," directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman and based on the book by the late Vito Russo, is thorough, honest, coherent and artful. Tackling the tricky, complicated question of gay Hollywood, the creators of this film acquit themselves admirably. The movie, narrated unobtrusively by Lily Tomlin, is a comprehensive view of the presence of gay themes and characters in movies from the very beginning to the present. We witness the dramatic evolution from total stereotype and vague innuendo to movies wholly about gay life, including realistic love stories (and, naturally, more sex and violence). The movie...

...identification with these stereotypes. Susie Bright recalls with strong emotion the lesbian scenes and images in films that have moved her. Ron Nyswaner, the writer of "Philadelphia," recalls being gay-bashed in reponse to the horribly violent "Cruising." The power of the movies is clear. As Lily Tomlin says Hollywood has taught "straight people what to think about gay people and gay people what to think about themselves...

...documentary, The Celluloid Closet, amply demonstrates. For nearly a century, Hollywood has done a shoddy, often slanderous job of showing what it is like to be homosexual. Adroitly assembled by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, with narration written by Armistead Maupin (Tales of the City) and read by Lily Tomlin, Celluloid Closet is by turns funny and poignant. It interlaces old clips (for instance, a peignoired Cary Grant declaring, in Bringing Up Baby, "I just went gay all of a sudden!") with cogent commentary by Gore Vidal, Harvey Fierstein and others. It should be getting raves at Oscar time--except...
