...Chief Justice. Burger saved his views on more prickly issues, such as the rights of criminal defendants, for the decisions he will take part in as a member of the court. Still, one man who was particularly impressed with Burger's performance at the convention was former Justice Tom Clark. "In my 22 years of attending these conventions," said Clark, "I've never seen anyone who has so quickly and effectively built a fire under this group as Burger." Conceived almost a year ago, the Frank Mankiewicz-Tom Braden column is regularly carried by 70 newspapers, including the Washington Post and New York Post, and has been offered as a summer fill-in to another 180 papers. More ac curate and less sensational than Pear son and Anderson, less likely to magnify trivial exclusives but also far less enterprising than Evans and Novak, Mankiewicz and Braden produce a stylish, knowledgeable column that offers sharp opinions and no doubletalk...

...Tom Wynne and Pat Conway were two superb safeties, and their loss could make the Crimson susceptible to the bomb. Junior Bill Kelly, whom Yovicsin had counted upon to move in at one spot, is sidelined for the season while he recuperates from a knee operation.
