Sheldon Lubow, a pupil of Claudio Arrau, and a winner of the Pierian Sodality Concerto Contest, was soloist in the next work, Liszt's Piano Concerto in E. With his big tone and sure technique, Lubow was in full control of the brilliant Liszt idiom. Fortissimo octaves boomed and cadenzas scintillated with the appropriate spice and dash. Lubow has one disturbing mannerism, however--he will linger on an appogiatura until the suspense becomes unbearable and the note of resolution is given up forever as lost. ...Lewis" has made no effort to entrap the casual reader. The book is a work of scholarship, and makes no particular attempt to capitalize on Lewis' volcanic personality or his famous colleagues. Wagner writes clearly, if without particular flair, and covers his points in orderly progression. Several instrumental soloists distinguished themselves, among them: flutists, Sue Alder and Cynthia Crane in the "Et misericordia" and "Esurientes" sections, and Michael Senturia, who played the oboe obligato during the soprano aria, "Quia respexit." The string section as a whole produced remarkably good intonation and tone quality.
