...closing, we want to remark that we would like to see all fellowships opened to women. However, as graduates of Radcliffe College, we feel uneasy about the envious tone used by the authors to describe the fellowships restricted to men. To us, differences in the size of the fellowships' awards do not determine the prestige or academic distinction that such fellowships confer. The authors of the article also fail to recognize that the $18,000 distributed by the Radcliffe fellowships could easily be divided into the same amounts as the $18,500 distributed by the Shaw, King, etc. Instead, Radcliffe...
Perhaps. But the infatuation also had a boisterous, abrasive, decidedly chauvinistic tone. Out in the desert, many among the nearly one-quarter of a million people who had gathered to welcome the shuttle home sported T shirts emblazoned EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT, RUSSIANS. In a New York bar, after watching the landing, a patron boasted: "The French and the Brits can't do anything like that. Neither can the Russkis...
Arriving in Bonn a few days later, Haig had to tone down Weinberger's pessimistic assessment of the prospects for Soviet-American negotiations. Commented the Neue Ruhr Zeitung: "Haig repaired the china that was smashed a few days earlier by Secretary Weinberger." But Cap keeps smashing away. As Bunthorne, Marty Fluger speaks his lines in a throaty, smart-ass tone that sounds like something between Groucho Marx and Frank Zappa--the Groucho resemblance heightens as Fluger lifts his eyebrows and flicks ashes off of an imaginary cigar. In the role of Grosvenor, Tim Reynolds, tall, tan, mustachioed, with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel, resembles nothing so much as a swinger in a single's bar. It would be the most natural thing for this Grosvenor to sidle...
Teague manages to maintain a light and joyous tone in Godspell, avoiding heavy-handed moralizing or cloying sentimentalisation of the religious message. The theatrical truth of the musical, which is also a religious one, is the sensibility and exaltation that results from careful following of Biblical doctrines. From the point of view of Christian believers, the work is a reaffirmation of the validity of the underlying message of the Christian God; for those of other faiths and non-believers, the message carries similar, although more measured, validity. Teague has gone out of her way to add references and touches that...
