...Director Peyton Reed's early features, Bring It On and Down with Love, were in-your-face comedies with a Pop art design scheme; they aimed to get to endearing by going through aggressive. Reed found a subtler tone in his Vince Vaughn-Jennifer Aniston hit The Break-Up, in which both the humor and the despair rose from domestic behavior that, if exaggerated for dramatic effect, was still recognizable. Yes Man straddles those two styles. It ambles along, Judd Apatow-style (and includes a fellatio gag that should have earned the movie an R rating) while affording Carrey...
...Portugal is getting no promises of American assistance for its offer, and there are lingering questions over Portuguese public opinion on accepting detainees. But Anthony Dworkin, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, says it sets the tone for what the E.U. hopes will be a fresh start once Obama takes office. "It is a symbol of Europe's eagerness to clean the slate and forge a different relationship," he says. That no doubt explains the book's occasionally snarky tone towards the mainstream media ("Blogs are turning this notion of an elite, degreed priesthood of journalists on its head"), a tone that blogs do particularly well. But this book is so useful that this card-carrying member of the "dinosaur media" is not going to take the bait. The HuffPosters capture all of the excitement of the blogosphere, enabling the would-be blogger to take a confident step online. It does...
...like to see in the district’s next superintendent at a meeting last night, marking the end of the first phase of the search process. Committee members emphasized that the list will not necessarily be a rigid set of requirements but a list that simply sets the tone for the search. “There are all different pieces of the pie, and this is one of them,” said member Marc C. McGovern. The list, which reflected concerns that the district’s new leader be able to lead a diverse population...
