...something? Why am I not impressed by a boy who skips from one side to the other of a broomstick laid on the stage (stepping on it at one point, I might add), in the aptly named "Broom Dance." There was an a cappella duet of a chilling minor tone that caught my imagination, and then it was back to the men with sashes who hop with bells on their feet...

What relatively little color there is can be a delight, as the general tone of the exhibition is one of restraint. A popular technique of the period was trois cmyons, the use of black, red and white chalks. Black chalk and pastels were used in Head of Potiphar's Wife to create a drawing that anyone could mistake for a painting. Red and black chalk work their magic in Young Woman Holding a Cornucopia; the folds of her robe are so well defined, yet shadowed at the same time, that one must wonder whether the work is a drawing...

We must return to the primal integrity..." Though Berenger appeals to him in the name of civilization and morality, Jean is unstoppable. He charges the walls, grunting almost incomprehensibly...
