This creates an additional conundrum. Because a polluted cloud does not rain itself out, notes University of Colorado atmospheric scientist Brian Toon, it tends to grow larger and last longer, providing a shiny white surface that bounces sunlight out to space. Indeed, one reason the earth has not yet warmed up as much as many anticipated may be due to the tug-of-war between industrial aerosols like sulfuric acid (which reflect heat) and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (which trap it). Fortunes are being made and will be lost in the market gyrations that are starting to dizzy the region. But risk is what Asia has always excelled at. "The Pacific Century has not been lost," says Singaporean Netpreneur Wong Toon King, "only delayed a bit." Some of those who are making it happen...

The beast, nicknamed...

...idea was to spice the old format with smart comers--Claire Danes (Romeo + Juliet), Omar Epps (Higher Learning) and Giovanni Ribisi (the medic in Saving Private Ryan)--and a screw-you modernity. Instead, director and co-writer Scott Silver (Johns) gives us a surly anti-toon; it's the Three Sociopathic Stooges with lots of Method mewling. By the time Ribisi has his big shouting scene with Epps ("Dude, your cover's been blown. Your cover's been blown. You cover has been blown!"), you realize these kids just aren't having any fun playing cops. But hang around...

Stately, plump Cyberswine gazes out across a cartoon world, ready to kick some serious toon butt. Cyberswine is both the name and the protagonist of a full-length animated movie, "Part machine. Part cop. Full boar," according to the trailer. You won't find it (him) on film, though--the movie is 100% digital bits, burned onto CD-ROMS and downloadable from the Net, and now showing at a computer near...
