...TOP, June 12.--In the practice yesterday great improvement was shown in the recover and drive and very encouraging work was done in rough water. No attempt was made for fast time, as Mr. Colson is confining his attention merely to form. The first crew rowed a three-mile race down stream with the Freshmen. Before returning to quarters the first boat was sent up stream over a four-mile course through rough water and with a quartering wind. For the first two miles the men rowed a 29 stroke, and in the last two raised...
...TOP, June 10.--On account of the hard practice of the last few days all the crews were given a rest this morning. In the afternoon the first crew rowed down to the Navy Yard and back to the quarters at a 28 stroke. The work was not as satisfactory as yesterday, lacked smoothness, and at the catch the power was applied too hard and too soon. The four-oar took a long row and is improving rapidly. A change was made in the order of the Freshman eight today. The present order is as follows...
...TOP, June 9.--Today's practice was the most encouraging since the crews have been here. The four-oar rowed a mile down stream against the tide, in 5 minutes, 50 seconds. The men rowed fairly well together but their time and slide control were ragged. At six o'clock the two University crews and the Freshmen raced down stream. The second dropped out at the Navy Yard, a quarter of a length ahead of the first. At this point the Freshmen were leading by a length and a quarter, and dropped out at the three-mile mark, two lengths...
...TOP, June 8.--In the practice today all the crews showed a decided improvement over the work of the last few days. At six o'clock the first crew started down stream, paced by the second and the Freshmen. The second crew dropped out at the Navy Yard, four lengths behind the first. At the three-mile mark the Freshmen were two lengths behind and stopped. The first boat rowed over the entire course, finishing with a 28 stroke, in 22 minutes, 30 seconds. A more spirited recovery and better control of the slides were the encouraging features of today...
...TOP, June 7.--With the exception of the Freshman four-oar, all the crews had light practice this morning. In the afternoon the first crew rowed over the four-mile course against unfavorable conditions of wind and tide in the time of 23 minutes, 55 seconds. For the first two miles the University boat was paced by the Freshmen, who pulled ahead at the start, but finished half a length of open water behind the University boat. In the last two miles the first boat was paced by the second, which pulled a length ahead at the start...
