...What makes it incredible is that there are real people in the Middle East sitting in front of their computers," said Jason A. Topaz '93. Instead of taking shelter, "they are typing in what is going on around them. It is really exciting...
While not admitting that any of their nuclear satellites are dangerous, the Soviets boast that their new type of space reactor, called Topaz, is especially safe. Topaz can produce up to 10,000 watts of power, about ten times as much as previous models. That enables Topaz-powered satellites to fly at such high altitudes, say Soviet scientists, that they will remain safely in orbit for up to 350 years, long enough to lose most of their radioactivity...
Then the plane vacuums up the particles again and again sails east. American landscapes are so resonant -- the sere wrinklings of Nevada mountains that hold the topaz lake, the Badlands, the great agricultural geometries of the Midwest, the stretch of Georgia that Sherman blackened. We fly now steady east, against the time zones, into darkness. At last Boston, below, slides toward us like Christmas, strings of light on velvet. How festive American cities look from the air at night...

At the same time, a team at Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., is working on platforms for a new generation to replace the midsize Taurus and Sable and the European Scorpio. A Ford design center in Hiroshima is working with Mazda to develop a replacement...

Apparently the bag option has little allure for many buyers, who have bought the safety devices on only 2% of the 189,000 Tempo and Topaz cars sold since the 1987 model year began. Last week Ford tried to pump new life into its air bags by slashing the price to $295. The company hopes that will...
