...into their family as the last bastion capable of giving meaning to their lives because they don't find much meaning elsewhere - not in politics, projects or work, and not in the future." That's ironic, because such new families will define the future. Nearly everyone who studies the topic predicts more of the same: singletons, childless couples, older mothers, cultural and ethnic diversity. As the traditional patriarchy breaks down, children will be more involved in decision-making, says the Future Foundation's Professor Howard. She foresees improvements to fertility treatments leading to more "vertical" family structures. A woman might...

...surprisingly, the concept that poker might actually help kids has its naysayers. The main topic of discussion at the National Council of Problem Gambling's annual convention in St. Paul, Minn., this past June was the rising threat of kids and gambling. In his keynote speech, Jeffrey Derevensky, co-director of the McGill University Youth Gambling Research Clinic, called out government and private industry for the unprecedented marketing of gambling to kids--from using cartoon characters on state lottery scratchers to mainstream retailers' selling World Poker Tour chocolates. Heads of state are sometimes too candid for their own good. But rarely do two of them blurt out what they're really thinking almost simultaneously, as George Bush and Pervez Musharraf did this week - and on a topic as touchy as U.S.-Pakistani cooperation against terrorism. Asked by CNN on Wednesday if he'd order U.S. military operations inside Pakistan to capture Osama bin Laden if there was solid intelligence on his location, Bush said "absolutely." The next day CBS released portions of a 60 Minutes interview with Musharraf, to be aired Sunday, in which he claims that...
