Nader rarely sticks to one topic when he speaks. His mind is a vast library of facts and dates, of reports, studies and legislative acts. Through the years he has compiled a list of cause and enemies which seems almost endless. And from this unwieldly mass of issues and debates come the material for his speeches. In his speech at the Beth Israel Hospital, for example. Nader used "the doctor's role in medicine" as an umbrella topic to take pot shots at the automotive industry, the highway industry, the drug companies, nuclear power and the makers of Wonder Bread...
After long soul searching the History Department voted a revision of sophomore tutorial that embraced two basic changes: a) the reduction from six to four topics and b) the creation of a new list of topics that are more focused and manageable than the old. To compensate for the removal of a required tutorial unit on a non-western subject, the Department added the requirement of a half course in non-western history (African, Asian, Lajin American, or Near Eastern). In addition, tutors are given the freedom to substitute either an area of their own choosing...
...Karl Marx. I expect his views will still be well represented within the tutorial, not only as a free topic for tutors who may wish to devote a full tutorial unit to him, but also within the area of historiography and the pre-1700 topic "The Peasants' War of 1525" (of which I am the author). I also expect women to be well represented within the new list of topics, but as full members of the historical process, not as entities extracted out as if they were foreign objects...
...name--the doctrine of Marxism. A solid understanding of its models and terminology is crucial in dealing with modern historical writing. Ozment stresses that there is "no suppression" going on, but neither he nor the department has provided a satisfactory reason for the change. Ozment adds that the topic has proved too broad for the short time allotted, but most tutors minimize the problem, saying that the new six-week period would be perfectly appropriate for a subject such as Marx...
Tutors can, if they wish, substitute a topic such as Marx for another in their particular class. But under the proposed revisions, the department will remove suggested reading lists for non-required areas from the materials supplied to tutors. Tutors say they enjoy teaching challenging subjects, but in the future, if they must compile a list for topics with which they are unfamiliar, they will be less likely to choose the elective and less likely to present it well...
