Paramedics used the "Jaws of Life" to remove the top of the mangled Eclipse and slide a backboard behind Wilhite before carefully lifting him out and placing him in a rigid collar. At the hospital, doctors considered operating immediately to fuse Wilhite's head back onto his spine, but that was impossible because of Wilhite's collapsed lungs and brain swelling.
