...Top hats, morning coats, decorations-all the regalia of a brilliant diplomatic party last week adorned the bodies of virtually all of France's Cabinet Ministers, most of her home diplomats, many of her social leaders, in one of the gloomiest caverns in Paris-the Gare du Nord. The notables had gathered to say good-by to a good friend, wit, gourmet, an artisan of tact, a monocle-bearing, well-dressed Briton, Sir Eric Phipps, 64, retiring from the British diplomatic service after two years as Ambassador to France and after 30-odd in the service of his Kings...
...Eric's successor will be 56-year-old Sir Ronald Hugh Campbell, who served as Minister to Paris from 1929 to 1935, has since been Minister to Yugoslavia. It is unusual for a British Ambassador to France (with Paris and Washington at the top of the British Ambassadorial ladder) not to have served in more than one Legation and at least one other Embassy previously, but Sir Ronald is brilliant, literary, shrewd, tactful, firm, sardonic, and so intent on the matter before him that even his golf has something of the nature of a political démarche...

One starling, having imitated the long, low, monotonous call of a flicker, remembered the flicker's tattoo on a tree, gave a perfect rendition of it by drumming with its beak on the top of its box. "To my mind," observed the bemused scientist, "this is one of the most remarkable instances of mimicry, since it has demanded an entirely new [for a starling] method of mechanical sound production...
Early this year, Malone started planning a Pilgrimage of Poetry. From English departments of some 700 U. S. colleges and universities he got rankings of all the late, great U. S. poets, settled for the top-ranked 32,* arranged with NBC a 12,000-mile Odyssey to broadcast from their homes, workshops, shrines. After an unofficial send-off from Admirer Auslander at the Library of Congress, the Pilgrimage got under way last Sunday. Pilgrim Malone visited the room in the Roger Brooke Taney house at Frederick, Md. which Francis Scott Key used to frequent, broadcast chattily of the old medico...
Today 25,000 barrels of Barco oil flow daily through the pipe line. Next year they expect to step that up to 50,000, with an eventual top of 70,000 barrels after all seven pumping stations are in. The oil yields 49% gasoline on straight run, double that under cracking processes (ordinary black oil yields no better than 24% gasoline on straight run). How much of it lies hidden in the upper Catatumbo basin nobody knows. The companies have until August 1941 to stake out their final claims. Then half of the Barco reverts to the Colombian Government...
